Thirty Paintings in 30 Days

The second annual challenge was more fun than the first.  This time around, I accepted that I might not like every painting and that I would have to post some that weren't "finished."  Yeah, it was really okay.

Reconnecting with a Facebook group of artists participating in the challenge also worked in my favor.  This group was a safe haven where we could whine a little, get a some advice, and support each other a lot.

Even though the holiday season was hectic and we're in the middle of some home renovations, the challenge was a good way to start the new year.  It has helped me focus on where I want to take my painting.

For the first time, I'm feeling hopeful about my future in art.  Of course, living in Portland, Oregon where the creative spirit rules might have something to do with it.  But all the good advice from artist friends and mentors is finally beginning to settle in and I'm feeling I'm good to move forward.

And move forward I will after a short break;  family and house have been neglected a bit.

Thirty Paintings in 30 Days - #27

#27 - Watercolor & Ink

It was loose, it was tight.  It was loose, it was tight - tight it stays.

Thirty Paintings in 30 Days - #24, #25, #26

Alcohol Inks on Yupo - #24, #25, #26

Back to the inks for something quick and really fun.  I'm itching to do some still life paintings in oil, but there's not much room in the studio for a set-up  yet.   I have something to look forward to.

The challenge is almost over - four paintings to go.

Thirty Paintings in 30 Days - #20

Most of my art time was spent fighting with this piece.  I put fiber paste on illustration board, allowed it to dry, painted it black, and then allowed that to dry.

After the image was sketched on, acrylic paint was scumbled onto the surface.

I was off to a good start and got so geeked by this I started photographing the progress for the blog.

And then it went south.

So much for my little photo demo.

I'm leaving this UNfinished piece as one of the challenge paintings.

That's as good as it gets for #20.

Thirty Paintings in 30 Days - #19

Watercolor / Pastel Pencil

One of my former watercolor teachers was known for shouting, "Somebody take my brush!"

Well,  I wish someone had taken my pastel pencil.   Thanks to computer technology, the worst of it has been cropped off.

Tomorrow is another day.

Thirty Paintings in 30 Days - #18

#18 - Watercolor

A quick watercolor portrait for today, and probably more of the same tomorrow.

While trying to straighten up the studio, I ran across some acrylics and illustration board.  Sounds interesting...

Thirty Paintings in 30 Days - #16 & #17

#16 - Alcohol ink on Yupo

#17 - Alcohol Ink on Yupo - Sold

Starry Night - Alcohol Ink on Yupo

The first two are new; the third one is pretty new, but not for the challenge - just wanted a bit more pop of color on the blog.

What can I say about alcohol inks?  The lovely transparent colors of the inks on white Yupo just knock my socks off.  Sometimes they look like stained glass.  Doing them can be relaxing or make me crazy.  And I absolutely love them.

Thirty Paintings in 30 Days

This is my husband.  No, not the one on the motorcycle.  My husband is the one in the white pants although he's not allowed to dress like that anymore.

This has absolutely nothing to do with painting, but I had a  b-a-d  painting day, so I wanted to offer something that might make someone besides me smile.

I'll catch up tomorrow with a couple of alcohol inks.

Thirty Paintings in 30 Days - #15

 #15 - Oil - 6 X 6

I reworked this old painting so much it has become new again.  I see the need for one more touch up and then I'll leave it alone.

Thirty Paintings in 30 Days - #14

Watercolor / quarter sheet

Had hoped to get some oil painting done today, but I didn't.  Such is life.

Thirty Paintings in 30 Days - #9, #10, #11, #12, #13

All of the paintings were done on watercolor quarter sheets.

I actually did six paintings to get ahead in the challenge.  I was afraid #6 would come back to haunt me, so I ripped it.  Ripping paper feels even better than scraping oil off gesso panel.

We'll be living in the studio a bit longer, maybe till the end of the month.  This will affect the type of art done for the painting challenge, but hopefully not the amount.

Thirty Paintings in 30 Days - #8

Daily Paintworks Challenge - "Paint the Fall"
Oil - 5 X 7

This second and maybe third group of paintings will be taken from different DPW challenges.

This painting is a reworked painting.

Thirty Paintings in 30 Days - # 6 & #7

Number Seven
Oil - 6 X 6

Number Six
Oil - 6 X 6

Oh, I'm behind in the challenge.  Hopefully, I'll catch up by Sunday.

It's been tough trying to paint in the studio.

But at least I have a studio.

Thirty Paintings in 30 Days

No painting today.  I will post the catch-up paintings on one day towards the end of the week.

A ton of bamboo flooring that has been acclimating in my kitchen and living room since October is finally going to be installed this month.

Today is rip-out day.  Bye-bye carpet (beige carpet and big, wet black dog don't mix).

Oh, this is "McCoy-asaurus."  He lives at McCoy Millwork in Portland.  See why I love living here?

Thirty Paintings in 30 Days - Day Five

Untitled
Oil - 6 X 6

This painting was done from a reference photo taken at a Great Lakes Voyageurs re-enactment back in Michigan a few years ago.

The Voyageurs were fur traders (thus the Native American  gentleman), missionaries and explorers that came to the area from French settlements in Canada in the 1600's.  Going to these re-enactments, particularly the campfire / lantern events after dark, is one of my favorite things to do.

Thirty Paintings in 30 Days - Day Four

The Kiss
Oil on Ampersand panel - 6 X 6

This painting was done using a little paint, lots of turps, and a small scratchy brush.   It's pretty sketchy; will probably grid it up to a larger piece in the future.

Three more days of portraits ahead.  What to do next?

Thirty Paintings in 30 Days - Day Two

Untitled

We're still entertaining out of state Christmas company;  off to Vancouver this afternoon.

... a morning painting on day two.

Thirty Paintings in 30 Days - Day One

Untitled
Oil - 6 X 6

Once again, the new year begins with Leslie Saeta's 30-30 Challenge.

With a self-imposed "theme of the week" plan in effect, the paintings for the next seven days will depict a variety of faces:  human, animal, statue, young, old, ...

I've even considered doing the face of a clock.  Then there's face-off (as in hockey), face to face, face it, the face of adversity, saving face, and back again to portraits.   And portraits it is.

So here we go.
