My husband is glad it is over.  Me, too.  Maybe I can finish some of these paintings.

30 - 30 Challenge - Day 28

Oil - 6 X 6

Due to technical difficulties (me, not the computer) this painting was posted late.    Looking at the photos below, you'll see I had planned on posting something a little different.

No, she's not my mom, but she looked like my mom and almost everyone else's mom during the late 50's.  In fact, she looked like that every day, first thing in the morning!

I think of Donna Reed because Elizabeth and I went antiquing yesterday.  First stop was Hippo Hardware.  You have to experience this place to believe it.

Then we went to Monticello Antique Market for a blast from the past.  (Their blog:  Monticello Antique Marketplace - great links)

Gosh, I think I had a pair of these

So what does this story have to do with today's painting?  Well, nothing.  I intended on painting something I bought from the shop, but changed course a bit - by about 200 years.

30 - 30 Challenge - Day 27

Oil - 6 X 6 - Sold

Well, I tried painting something from my imagination.  I got stuck, looked at the clock, and decided to move on.  The good thing is that it spawned an idea for a watercolor painting.

Elizabeth and I spent this rainy day antiquing in Portland.  I'll post some photos tomorrow.

30 - 30 Challenge - Day 26

Oil - 6 X 6 - Sold

The problems with Facebook were resolved and I'm back on with my challenge group.  Happy days!

I'm itching (screaming) to tweak this painting, but at this point in the challenge and at this time of night I know better.

Tomorrow I'm off on a treasure hunt for painting props with my friend Elizabeth.  I'll need my sleep.

30 - 30 Challenge - Day 25

Oil with Palette Knife - 6 X 6 - Sold

Continuing with the wine theme...  Can't wait to get outside and set up an easel in wine country.

30 - 30 Challenge - Day 24

Oil - 6 X 6

I did not feel like painting today; hence two wipeouts and one just finished.

30 - 30 Challenge - Day 23

Oil with Palette Knife - 6 X 6 - Sold

I dropped this wet painting face down on the floor a few minutes ago.   I will take that as a sign to move on to different subject matter.  Some new ideas for bottles have been rocking around inside my head, but I'll come back to them later.

Only a week left to go in this challenge.  At this point, I've noticed only positive changes in my attitude.

Also contributing to my positive attitude is our recent association with the Alla Prima Portland art group (   Alla Prima Portland  ).   We went to the Thursday morning meeting today.  I just sat there, like a sponge, surrounded by these incredibly talented, generous artists, soaking up their experience and advice - lucky me!

30 - 30 Challenge - Day 22

To my FACEBOOK group:  I've been knocked off of the FB account for "security reasons."  My dinosaur cell phone won't accept text messages from FB so they say they are unable to verify my identity.   Anyway, I will miss you guys & hope you're all able to finish the challenge.

Well, the challenge is winding down. Think I'll be doing a few more wine bottles.

I have a small stash left over from the holidays, and may head out to wine country to pick up a few more bottles - for reference material, that is.

30 - 30 Challenge - Day 21

My niece Heather and her husband Dusty came for a quick visit a few months ago.  They were wined and dined in and around Portland.

Of course, we tried squeezing in some spectacular sightseeing highlights like the Columbia River Gorge

 and Multnomah Falls.

We were convinced we had dazzled them with the extreme beauty and eclectic vibe of the Pacific Northwest.

And so what was Dusty's favorite attraction?  It was Herman, the 70 year old, 11 foot long, 500 pound sturgeon who lives at the Bonneville Dam Fish Hatchery.

Must be a guy thing.

In honor of Herman ...

30 - 30 Challenge - Day 20

Oil with Palette Knife - 6 X 6

Ah, the Brownie Hawkeye camera - made in America with that "sturdy molded body; handsome modern styling."  Most families in my generation had one.  I promised my mom I would keep the camera, flash attachment, and yes, even the box. I'm glad I did.

The camera actually took some pretty nice photos and has definitely left us with sweet, happy memories.

This is my older brother, Cowboy Bob.
Is that a real TV?  I swear I don't remember that.

The infamous basement birthday party.  That's me, the short blondie next to Cowboy Bob.   The quality of this photo isn't that great, but I don't think it was the fault of the camera.

You'd be smiling, too, if your parents let you eat all that candy at one sitting.  I think the bottle of beer on the table had something to do with it.

This is me with my brother now.  I think the Brownie took funnier pictures.

30 - 30 Challenge - Day 19

Oil - 8 X 8

Animals rule in Portland.  I've never seen so many dogs (even in Home Depot), cats, fish, birds, ...  Believe it or not, Portland city dwellers are even allowed to keep 3 chickens (hens) in their backyards.  I have a dog, but no chickens.

The pig (or hog) sculptures actually exist in a NW Portland neighborhood called the Alphabet District.  The trio hangs out on the street and sneers at passersby.  They usually elicit smiles from adults and occasional screams from toddlers.

I was looking for something mindless, or tasteless, to paint today and I think I found it.  I abandoned the painting a little early (I'm bracing for the lecture on values from my artist husband).  Tomorrow's challenge piece will be started this afternoon so I can goof off with my buddy Elizabeth tomorrow.

I love Portland.

30 - 30 Challenge - Day 18

Oil with Palette Knife - 6 X 6

The Oregon sky - almost as beautiful as the Oregon landscape.

30 - 30 Challenge - Day 17

Oil with Palette Knife - 6 X 6 - Sold

One of the nicest surprises about living in Oregon was discovering that we were so close to Willamette Valley wine country.

A Christmas season field trip yielded a few bottles for the wine rack and a ton of ideas for paintings.

A photograph cannot capture the stunning beauty of this Oregon landscape.  I'm so thankful I live here.

30 - 30 Challenge - Day 16

Oil with Palette Knife - 5 X 7 - Sold

We were sitting around watching a '60's movie last night when the idea for this painting popped up on the screen.

I got up early this morning intending to paint, but wound up with our favorite Thursday morning breakfast group of artists - Alla Prima Portland ( Alla Prima Portland ).  In this group, there's no discussion about what anyone did over the weekend unless its regarding art.

Members of the group instruct, encourage and support each other.  We also "show and tell"  -  I mean review each other's work.

The level of skill of these experienced artists is really impressive.   Not only do I get to stuff my face with a delicious breakfast, but I benefit greatly from their knowledge and generosity.

30 - 30 Challenge - Day 15

Oil with Palette Knife - 6 X 6

I confess I've painted this trio before, but after a stinker I needed something quick.  Photographed at night - running late.

Tomorrow is the beginning of the end of the challenge.  I've tried lots of new things (hence the wipers), but have really enjoyed the process.

I've been involved in a private Facebook exchange with a group of artists with whom I took a Carol Marine workshop in Chicago last year.  They are hilarious... and this keeps us all pretty humble.

30 - 30 Challenge - Day 14

Oil - 5 X 7 - Sold

Just a quick one to stay on schedule.   Painting everyday has sparked new ideas as never before.  It will be fun painting some of them without the time constraint.

Some of our neighbors collect some pretty cool old cars.
This is another candidate for glazing when it dries.
